Sounio

Sounio (or Cape Colonna) is the cape located at the southernmost tip of the Attica region. Its beaches are rocky and steep. It rises almost vertically from the sea to a great height, forming a small cove to the west, separated by an eastern promontory. Sounio is known for its significant geographical position and the ruins of the ancient Temple of Poseidon located there. In recent years, the broader area, due to its environmental value, has been declared a national park.

Sounio is 70 kilometers away from Athens. There, you’ll find the enchanting Temple of Poseidon. Driving along the coastal road called ‘Poseidon,’ one of the most beautiful coastal routes in Greece, you will pass through the charming areas of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza. It’s an ideal place to enjoy the stunning view of the Saronic Gulf.

The panoramic view of the entire Aegean is breathtaking, and at the top of the cliff stands an exceptional monument, the Temple of the Sea God, Poseidon. Sounio is believed to have been the home of the sea god, Poseidon. Many legends and myths surround the area, parallel to reality! The temple of the goddess Athena is also right nearby.

The sunrise from Sounio, which one can enjoy, became famous as it was featured on the ‘Millennium World TV Show 2000‘.
